Hacienda lowers the surcharges for paying taxes after the deadline

Hacienda lowers the surcharges for paying taxes after the deadline

The rates range from 1% for a delay of more than one day - compared to the current 5% - and 15% for delays of more than one year instead of 20%

The Treasury believes that excessively high surcharges when paying late taxes can be "dissuasive" and "counterproductive" because, instead of encouraging the filing of the return, the taxpayer is discouraged because of its high cost. Sometimes the price of the surcharge is similar to that of the fine in case the Treasury discovers the deception, and there may be people who decide to wait in case they are not caught. Therefore, this Thursday Minister Montero confirmed the reduction of these surcharges for those delays that have not been previously warned by the AEAT.

Thus, the new law to fight against tax fraud will include the modification of the commissions established by the Tax Agency for the extemporaneous presentation of declarations, for which no penalties are applied, but surcharges.

The change in surcharges ranges from 1% for each full month of delay to 15% when the year passes . For reasons of "proportionality and tax justice", this "growing" system is established seeking a "greater proportionality" when updating the percentages of surcharge paid by the taxpayer. Previously, these surcharges were 5% monthly and 20% at the end of the year.

Thus, the greater the delay, the surcharges are going up but with percentages lower than the current ones. "With this reform, the taxpayer pays what corresponds", assure this newspaper sources of Finance. Of course, the Government wanted to make clear that this amendment "there is no forgiveness or tax cutoff as has happened with other governments," in reference to the fiscal amnesty of the PP Government of 2012.
